About the Event

The Center for Art & Archaeology (CA&A) of the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) is organizing a 5–day Virtual Workshop on Museum Collections and Visitor Engagement (November 30–December 4, 2020), supported by the U.S. Mission to India, New Delhi. This workshop has been developed based on the recommendations of the White Paper that resulted from the U.S. Embassy supported All Indian Museum Summit 2019, and which was presented to the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in November 2019.

This will be the second of two workshops within the U.S.–India Professional Collaboration initiative towards sharing U.S. and Indian best practices in museum curation. The successful fellows hold curatorial and outreach positions across both public and private institutions in India. They are Ms. Ruta Waghmare Baptista (Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai, Maharashtra); Ms. Avijna Bhattacharya (Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi); Ms. Moumita Dhar (National Museum, New Delhi); Dr. Baishali Ghosh (Museum, Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, West Bengal); Ms. Moumita Ghosh (Bihar Museum, Patna, Bihar); Ms. Ritwika Misra (Weavers Studio, Kolkata, West Bengal); Ms. Pavithra Muddaya (Vimor Museum of Living Textiles–Vimor Handloom Foundation, Bengaluru, Karnataka); Ms. Shubhasree Purkayastha (Museum of Art and Photography (MAP), Bengaluru, Karnataka); Dr. Kishore Raghubans (Archaeological Museum, Velha Goa, Goa); Ms. Chelsea Santos (The City Palace Museum, Udaipur, Rajasthan); Ms. Krishna Shekhawat (Mehrangarh Museum Trust, Jodhpur, Rajasthan); Ms. Pema Kesang Sherpa (Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Government of Sikkim, Namchi, Sikkim); Mr. Neeraj Thakur (Himachal State Museum, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh); Dr. Jyoti Tokas (National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi) and Dr. Waman Anandrao Wankhede (Allahabad Museum, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh).

During the workshop they will learn about documentation and digitization of collections, preventive conservation; conceptualization and execution of exhibitions as well as visitor experience and public engagement. Fellows will take part in course work, which will be critiqued and they will each create a visitor experience program at the end of the workshop.

Dr. Madhuvanti Ghose (Alsdorf Associate Curator of Indian, Southeast Asian, and Himalayan Art from The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, U.S.A.) will lead this workshop. The experience of the participants will be further enhanced by special presentations by Dr. Vishakha Desai (Senior Advisor for Global Affairs, Columbia University, New York, U.S.A.), Dr. Darielle Mason (The Stella Kramrisch Curator of Indian and Himalayan Art, Head of the Department of South Asian Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) and Ms. Rachel Freeman (Associate Paper Conservator, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, U.S.A.).
