About Event

The Center for Art & Archaeology (CA&A) of the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) is organizing a 5–day Virtual Workshop on Museum Curation (10–14 August 2020), with grant support from the Public Affairs Section of the Embassy of the United States of America in New Delhi. This workshop has been developed based on the recommendations of the White Paper that resulted from the U.S. Embassy supported All Indian Museum Summit 2019, and which was presented to the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in November 2019.

This will be the first of two workshops within the U.S.–India Professional Collaboration initiative towards sharing U.S. and Indian best practices in museum curation and exhibition development. After an overwhelming response to the initial announcement, fifteen participants have been selected for the workshop from an equity and inclusion perspective. The successful participants hold curatorial positions across India and represent both public and private institutions or are independent curators. During the workshop, they will learn about the role of a curator and improve their interpretation and label writing skills. Participants will take part in course work, which will be critiqued and they will each curate a virtual exhibition at the end of the program.

Dr. Madhuvanti Ghose (Alsdorf Associate Curator, The Art Institute of Chicago) will lead this workshop. The experience of the participants will be further enhanced by special lectures presented by Dr. Vidya Dehejia (Barbara Stoler Miller Professor, Columbia University) and Dr. Debra Diamond (Curator, Freer Gallery of Art, National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian Institution).
